Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in defense or defense positions.
"As we did, you all made an vow to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a furious response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership issued a joint statement denouncing the statements.
"Violent politics has no place in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged digital publications and retract his aggressive language before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Representatives' Defiant Reaction
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who value this nation and took an vow to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and decide all that."
White House Reaction
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a video message to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
