Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
