Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration did not share further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president supported a peace initiative endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday occurred before rumors that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he commented.
