Sovereign to Share Intimate Message on His Health Battle in Television Address
His Majesty has taped a intimate address regarding his battle with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's fundraising campaign, spearheaded by Cancer Research UK and a major network.
The royal household stated the King would reflect on his "recovery journey" as a person living with the disease, in a recorded address on this Friday at the evening slot.
The recording, filmed within his London residence a fortnight ago, will emphasise the importance of cancer screening checks to ensure more people detect the condition at an early stage.
This represents a rare update on the wellbeing of the Sovereign, who has been receiving ongoing care since his condition was announced in early last year. But it is thought improbable the King will identify his particular diagnosis.
The Campaign's Primary Goal
The awareness initiative each year collects money for scientific studies and therapies and prompts people to get check-ups to increase the chances of an early diagnosis.
The King's public discussion about his health challenge, and living with cancer, has been designed to raise awareness and to encourage more people to get checked - and this will be taken a step further with this unique direct participation.
Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to continue his schedule, preserving a full diary in spite of his frequent sessions of therapy, and he is understood not to have sought to be characterised by his condition.
Recently has seen the Sovereign, undertaking several foreign visits, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and welcoming the largest volume of foreign dignitaries to the UK for a generation, which included the German president last week.
Charity Broadcast Event
Friday evening's charity show on television, featuring presenters including a team of famous hosts, will appeal to people not to be scared of getting preventative tests.
All three have been had experience with cancer - Davina McCall disclosed recently she had undergone surgery for breast cancer, while Clare Balding was treated for the illness over a decade ago. Presenter Hills has previously discussed his parent, who had stomach cancer and then later leukaemia.
The programme will reach out to the roughly millions of people in the UK who health organisations state are not up to date with NHS screening schemes, with an website to let people check if they are qualified for examinations for key health indicators.
In an attempt to demystify health tests and demonstrate the importance of timely identification there will be a live broadcast from cancer clinics at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.
"The goal is to take the fear out of cancer screening and show the public that they are not alone in this," stated Davina McCall.
Understanding Health Checks
Currently in the UK, there are several key national health screening services - for specific cancers - offered to eligible individuals.
A new preventative initiative is also being slowly rolled out for people at high risk of developing the illness, primarily aimed at people of a certain age, who have a smoking history or used to.
Men may enquire about prostate cancer checks, but there is no national programme operational.
Funding Research
The fundraising campaign, which has generated over one hundred million pounds over the past decade, is supporting multiple medical projects involving 13,000 patients.
King Charles, in a address for dignitaries at a gathering for related organisations in earlier this year, had spoken of understanding the "overwhelming and at times frightening experience" for cancer sufferers and their families.
But he noted his personal journey of managing cancer had demonstrated that "the darkest moments of sickness can be illuminated by the support of carers," as he thanked those who supported those receiving treatment.
Official sources has not disclosed the nature of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has undergone. The King's cancer was discovered following he had received a prostate procedure.
