The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
