The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
