New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
