Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 to the Heat.

The star player was hurt towards the end of the second quarter in an inadvertent contact with team-mate Spencer Jones.

The other player landed on the footwear of the MVP, who instantly collapsed to the court grabbing his leg.

The veteran player, who is leading the NBA season in rebounds and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup before incurring the problem.

Jokic will have an MRI on the following day to assess the extent of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic knew something was wrong," stated Denver head coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Any player that gets hurt, it's tough to see, particularly a player as special as him. We will know more tomorrow."

"We will continue as a team. Of course, currently, I am more worried about Jokic personally and the frustration of facing a situation of that nature."
